CA: $150,000 Proposed Fine

California’s Fair Political Practices Commission is considering a $150,000 for various campaign finance violations, according to this report.

Fair Political Practices Commission investigators said that, from January 2002 to June 2006, [Mark] Leggio or his businesses gave $66,400 in campaign contributions to legislative candidates, local candidates, and a statewide committee in other people’s names and then reimbursed them.

Such contributions would violate the state ban on campaign money laundering. In addition, donations to legislative candidates put Leggio in violation of state campaign-finance limits. He also failed to report the contributions as a major donor. The maximum penalty was $170,000.

The matter is on the FPPC’s agenda for December 11, 2008.
