Judge narrows and extends Republican National Committee consent decree on ballot security

Politico reports that a Federal judge issued an opinion in the Republican National Committee consent decree case yesterday.

In a ruling that extended the restrictions for at least another eight years, but also slightly narrowed the consent decree containing them, U.S. District Court Judge Dickinson Debevoise of Newark asserted that “voter intimidation presents an ongoing threat to the participation of minority individuals in the political process.”

    The consent decree was not “extended” for eight years, but rather for the first time was revised to include an end date. Previously, it had no end date. This was a victory for the RNC, not a defeat.
