At issue is federal regulation of corporations’ independent spending in elections. Yet a broad ruling could also affect regulation of corporations’ contributions and direct spending on behalf of a candidate and possibly alter the landscape in the states. Twenty-two states ban corporate spending in state elections, and a high-court decision undercutting those bans could affect upcoming gubernatorial races.
