According to this report on the Jefferson trial, a lobbyist offered to bribe Rep. William Jefferson in connection with oilfield rights.
James Creaghan told the jury in Jefferson’s bribery trial that he negotiated a deal that would have given Mose Jefferson a piece of a West African oil field. In return, Creaghan expected William Jefferson to use his influence as a congressman to untangle a feud over the development rights of the fields in Sao Tome and Principe, a nation of islands off the west coast of Africa.
