    Here’s a story on new proposed lobbyist rules in Long Beach, California, and their potential application to a union official.

    “Key within the definition of lobbyist is the word `influence,”‘ said Carl Kemp, a shipping industry lobbyist who says that if the council is going to require lobbyists to register and report their activities at City Hall, unions and nonprofits, now exempt, should be included as well. “Who are those who are trying to and actually have the most influence over decision makers, and should they be required to register?”

  • “The accelerating decline” of America and campaign finance

    The Post’s David Ignatius mentions campaign finance reform in this editorial this morning.

    I hear people worrying more and more that our political system is broken. Sen. Evan Bayh said it when he announced that he wouldn’t run for reelection. Sen. John McCain said it often during his long battle for campaign-finance reform. President Obama says it, one way or another, almost every week. It’s the one thing that Democrats and Republicans seem to agree on.
