$3 Checkoff Mystery Deepens

I previously noted that some of Obama’s tax returns showed that he failed to indicate that he wanted $3 to go to public funding of presidential campaigns. Today we learned:

Asked whether he felt the current system of funding campaigns through public money was antiquated, Obama admitted, “It is creaky, and needs to be reformed if it’s going to work.”

But the White House hopeful was also asked Friday why he personally did not check off the box on his tax returns that would have indicated he’d contribute three dollars to the public fund.

“You know, I have always checked off $3 in the past so I’m going to have to talk to my accountant,” Obama said. “That may have been an oversight or a mistake. In all my previous years I have, so I should find out what’s going on there.”

Speechnow.org Hearing

Later today, the CCP Blog should have reports on today’s hearing in the Speechnow.org case

SpeechNow.org is a completely independent group of individual citizens, not a PAC or a party.  It is simply Americans talking to Americans about an issue of vital public importance—a right that is fully protected by the First Amendment.

In today’s hearing, IJ Senior Attorney Steve Simpson will argue that SpeechNow.org should be granted a preliminary injunction, protecting it from an enforcement action by the Federal Election Commission as the case proceeds.  That would free the group to air ads and raise funds for political advocacy immediately.
