DISPOSITION OF CAMPAIGN FUNDS. YN. “Can a candidate just keep the money? The answer is: not exactly.”

CA: DEVELOPER LIMIT. LAT. “L.A.’s elected leaders are on the brink of passing a law that would deprive them of one of their biggest sources of political money — real estate companies with projects pending at City Hall.”

CO: ROLE OF MONEY. CC. “A Washington D.C. based non-profit that pumped millions of dollars nationwide into the 2018 elections, spent heavily in Colorado on progressive issues and Democrat candidates, including Attorney General Phil Weiser, Colorado Secretary of State filings show.”

MI: CASE DEVELOPMENTS. ML. The defense has argued that a request for campaign funds was misconstrued.

MI: TEXT SHOCK. DN. “A longtime Lansing lobbyist testified Tuesday that she interpreted a text message at the center of charges against state Rep. Larry Inman as a request for ‘as much money as we could give him.'”

NY: COURTS COULD SINK. SKG. “But advocates worry that the final report left out a key legal clause — and that could jettison the entire program if any one part of it is successfully challenged in court. It’s called a severability clause, and it’s often included to protect a new law from court challenges.”

NY: DONOR WORRY. GTH. “Cuomo and the Democratically-controlled legislature created a Public Campaign Financing Commission to diminish the role of large donors in political campaigns. The commission made its final recommendations this week. They include creating a new system that pays candidates up to 12 times the amount they raise in small campaign donations and capping the maximum donations.”

NY: THIRD PARTY SLAM. NYDN. “The Working Families Party isn’t about to throw in the towel. The union-fueled third party says measures meant to boot minor parties from the ballot in New York will only embolden progressives and could spell trouble for Gov. Cuomo.”

PLEA ENTERED. LAT. “After years of denials and claims that he was the target of a political witch hunt, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine) is scheduled to appear in federal court Tuesday morning to plead guilty in a sweeping campaign finance investigation.”

WSJ. “If Joe Biden falters, the received wisdom runs, nominating Michael Bloomberg to head the Democratic ticket would boost the party’s chances next November by pitting a strong, credible moderate against Donald Trump. It’s possible. But the former mayor of New York could do his party an even bigger favor just by losing.”

ELECTION SECURITY DELAY. HILL. “House Republicans are criticizing Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for ‘sidelining’ election security for impeachment.”

NY: OVERHAUL COMING. NYDN. “The panel tasked with overhauling New York’s campaign finance laws and creating a public matching funds system from scratch released its final report Sunday evening — a day before it was due.”

SC: ROLE OF FUNDS. PC. “Remember the good old days, when political action committees were the worst example we could imagine of legal organizations exercising a corrupting influence on our elections?”
