Contributions and Public Buildings

Based on this article, there seems to be “controlling legal authority” in Massachusetts that accepting campaign contributions in public buildings might be problematic.

A letter from the Office of Campaign and Political Finance dated July 23 and addressed to Jennifer Benson, Democratic candidate for the 37th Middlesex district, states that her campaign broke the law when she accepted six donations totaling $1,000 at the June 9 meet and greet event.

State law prohibits candidates from soliciting donations in public buildings.

The campaign has since returned all of the donations, and the OCPF did not impose any monetary penalties on Benson, according to the letter.
