The Texas Ethics Commission fined Supreme Court Justice Nathan Hecht $29,000 after finding that he broke campaign finance laws by accepting and then failing to report an excessive political contribution from a major Texas law firm.

Hecht, the longest-serving member of the high Texas court, accumulated the legal fees in the fight over allegations that he abused his position by openly supporting Harriet Miers’ bid for a U.S. Supreme Court seat.
