Campaigning “Out of the Box”

South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer is offering a variety of items to raise money for his campaign.

At least one political watchdog group thinks the site has the potential to skirt campaign finance laws; but Bauer said the site actually limits what he can raise because he must claim items donated as contributions and the resulting money raised by the sale as another contribution.

“I’ve never heard of this being done in South Carolina, or anywhere else for that matter,” said John Crangle, director of the Columbia office of Common Cause. “You could see how it might turn out to be abusive. Someone could theoretically give him a $20,000 new car and he could turn around and sell it to one of his buddies for 3,000 bucks.”
